Doug Ammon’s Insider Tips
On Location Director of Social Content Doug Ammon speaks on his journey and tips to making a career out of social media
LOWELL THOMAS, September 22, 2025- On Monday night, Doug Ammon, the Director of Social Content for On Location spoke during the speaker series press conference at the Lowell Thomas Communications Building at Marist University. He not only spoke about his journey to becoming a Director of Social Content, but also what goes into making a career out of it.
“To really see social transcend from people posting food pictures to this incredible job has been amazing to see”, said Ammon.
Starting his career in social media in 2014, Ammon never could've predicted the heights social media could reach. Originally wanting to be a journalist, he fell in love with social content from his first post with the Philadelphia Union. This would kickstart a career that would see him transition from the Union to the Philadelphia 76ers, to the NBA, before finally landing at On Location.
“You are the voice of your brand for the world”, said Ammon.
The transition from the NBA to On Location was a challenge for Ammon. Going from a large team focused on getting highlights up first to being solely responsible for shaping his brand's image is a major shift. Ammon has embraced the challenge though, as it allows him to be more creative to show off the fan experience On Location can provide.
“There is so much noise now”, said Ammon.
The challenge for Ammon doesn't just come from the shift in content he now makes, but rather the vast number of voices in the social media space. Working for a brand such as the NBA, the brand itself helps dilute the noise. But now, it allows for a challenge to get On Location seen amongst all the noise and buzz of social media.
“Social is competitive and you need that drive to be successful”, said Ammon.
Coming from a collegiate sport background, Ammon learned to hone the competitive drive needed to be successful in sports and applies it to social media. Being competitive in nature is needed to rise above the noise of social media, and it's what allows Ammon to continue to be successful.
